Here the "boot" of the car is the space at the rear where you usually keep
stuff like spare tyres, tools etc. A US "car boot" here is called a wheel
clamp. Hence "car boot" sales are typically large open-air events where
public vendors might pay, say, £5 for a pitch and bring second hand items
along in their "car boot" to sell... laying them out on trestle tables.
Obviously, some are held indoors too, such as computer oriented ones.

"Car boots" are excellent places to pick up all sorts of household goods,
second hand game consoles, videos, TVs - whatever.

I trust the term "merkin" has the same meaning everywhere? 8^)
